AVB calls Gareth Bale and Aaron Lennon the 'best players in the world'

The wingers have formed a vital part of the Portuguese tacticians Tottenham Hotspur plans so far this season, but are they as good as he thinks they are? If not, could they be?

Andre Villas-Boas is clearly a very confident young man, it is quite obvious in the way he carries himself and builds up the talents of his players on a constant basis. His similarities with Jose Mourinho have been courted on many occasions, mostly due to nationality, looks and similar early success.

But while Jose Mourinho has recently had a slight pop at some of his players, and rightly so after Los Merengues poor start to the season AVB has made a quite sensational claim relating to two of his current flock.

When speaking up the chances of youngster Andros Townsend, who does look a promising individual, he mentioned how he was currently competing with the ‘best players in the world with Gareth Bale and Aaron Lennon’.

Obviously he doesn’t mean they are the sole two best players in world football, so maybe he meant in their positions as wide-men. Yeah sure Gareth Bale, on his day is simply unplayable with an unflagging persistence and stamina not to mention his incredible sprint speed being reminiscent of an ostrich once he gets into the full upright position.

His final ball usually resembles a cross-shot but what a cross-shot it is, and it usually does the trick. Bale is probably one of the best in the world yes.

But Lennon?

Not sure if I buy that one. He is good, of course he is good and his short bursts of acceleration are a deadly weapon. But his final ball reminds me of Kieron Dyer’s erratic attempts and his form comes in too varying intermittences for him to be considered among the world’s best.

Yet he could probably make it up there. He has all the raw talent and a few years ago he was tearing apart any defence in the Premier League seemingly at will. Now with his recall to the England national team he has the chance to impose himself on the squad once again, perhaps at the expense of the much maligned Ashley Young.

If confidence is an issue he has struggled with in the past then he need not fear AVB’s belief in his abilities as the Yorkshiremen is clearly thought of very highly at White Hart Lane.

So can Aaron Lennon be one of the world’s best?
