1. 1492 - Christopher Columbus lands in the Bahamas and is credited as the first European to reach the Americas

2. 1899 - The Boer War begins

3. 1935 - Luciano Pavarotti is born

4. 1945 - The Nazi party is ordered to dissolve by The Allied Control Council, which states that any attempt at it's revival in any guise would be considered a criminal offense

5. 1968 - The 19th Summer Olympics Games of the XIX Olympiad opens in Mexico City, Mexico

6. 1970 - Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice's Jesus Christ Superstar debuts on Broadway

7. 1978 - British punk rocker Sid Vicious from is arrested on suspicion of murder, after his girlfriend's body is found in their New York hotel room

8. 1983 - The 3 surviving members of the Beatles are invited to Liverpool to accept the Freedom of the City

9. 1984 - A bomb explodes at the Conservative Party conference in Brighton in a direct attack on the British Government 

10. 1986 - Ronald Reagan and Mikhail Gorbachev fail to reach agreement at disarmament talks in Reykjavik

11. 2000 - At least six American sailors die in what's thought to have been a suicide bomb attack on a US Navy destroyer in Yemen
