Four British disappointments from the sporting year

posted: 7 months ago

Roy Hodgson

It's been a year of unparalleled success for British sportspeople, with tennis and gold majors won, the incredible Olympics, and being part of the astonishing Ryder Cup victory. But what have been the disappointments this year?

Euro 2012 - It seems so long ago that it almost isn't part of this summer's sport. But England's poor performance can't be ignored. Other than a thrilling 3-2 victory against Sweden, England's impact on the tournament was as negligible as our midfield was against Italy. Another penalty shoot-out failure seemed the most appropriate way to go.

Home nations football - England aren't the only British football side to have been poor this year though. As a group we suffered a penalty shoot out loss in the Olympics, but the results in World Cup Qualifying have been awful too. The last match day before this international break finished with England drawing at home to Ukraine, Wales getting thumped 6-1 by Serbia, Scotland drawing 1-1 at home to Macedonia and Northern Ireland drawing 1-1 at home to mighty Luxembourg. I think that more or less says it all.

English cricket - As a whole, cricket has been a bit of a let down this year. The men's team were beaten by a dominant South African side on home soil to surrender their status as the number one Test side in the world. Although they clung onto the number one position in the ODI format, they recently crashed out in the quarter finals of the World Twenty20, failing to defend their title. The women's side also failed to defend their Twenty20 title, losing to arch-rivals Australia in the final. Both sides are still chock full of great players, but they couldn't be said to have joined in this years incredible British success.

Jenson Button and Lewis Hamilton - The unofficial British Formula 1 team is Mclaren, with their two British world champion drivers, but both men have had a poor 2012. It has all come to head recently with Hamilton deciding to leave the team, barracking Jenson Button on Twitter believing he had unfollowed him and apologising after he realised he never followed him in the first place. All very undignified.

Are there any other British performances you have been disappointed by this year?
