Although Frank Lampard and Ryan Bertrand didn’t make the trip to Poland, and Gary Cahill was replaced by Joleon Lescott, Ashley Cole returned to the England starting line-up, collecting his 99th cap. However manager Roy Hodgson has warned Cole that competition for his position at left back is “as good as it’s been.”
As the left back inches closer to his 100th appearance for England there are further reports he’s also moving nearer the exit door at Chelsea. A contract resolution is looking more unlikely, and PSG are apparently willing to shell out £23 million for the left back to ward off interest from Real Madrid and the Manchester clubs.
Another player rumoured to be leaving in January is Daniel Sturridge. The player does not seem to feature in Di Matteo’s plans and could head to Liverpool or link up once again with Andre Villas-Boas at Spurs. The Blues are reportedly looking for more than £12 million for the striker.
Chelsea would be looking to replace Sturridge, with Falco persistently rumoured to be the main target. But Athletico Madrid President Enrique Cerezo is confident Falcao will not leave this season even if his £48.5 million buy-out clause is met. Chelsea may need to wait until the summer for the Colombian.
If they are looking for a January replacement for Sturridge they have been linked again with Loic Remy. Chelsea were close to signing the Marseilles striker in the summer transfer window, and are believed to be prepared to meet the £15 million asking price.
Their current striker, Fernando Torres, has spoken about his move to Chelsea, which he described as forward step. Whilst he struggled in his first season and a half at the club, the Euro 2012 Golden Boot winner believes he is now a better all-round player. He did also say however, that such was his despair last year, that he and other players didn’t care about winning or losing.
Looking ahead to the weekend’s match at Spurs, Clint Dempsey has said how he hopes that Spurs can end Chelsea’s unbeaten run. Both sides are in good form heading into the match.
