It is a well coined phrase that we know well; its use usually implies that somebody has made someone else feel resentful or less strongly it can be used simply as a term for upsetting someone; to ‘put someone’s nose out of joint’. It essentially means to damage pride as the nose is such a visible portion of the human anatomy its disfigurement is a rather permanent and often irreversible feature. Ask Mick McCarthy or Steve Ogrizovic (if you dare).
However one player who really did put someone’s nose out of joint this weekend was Lille’s Montenegrin defender Marko Basa. The someone in question… Marko Basa.
But contrary to the idiom’s official meaning the wound will be a source of pride for certain as he did so scoring a last gasp equaliser against Ligue 1 rivals Bordeaux. With everyone including the keeper up for a late corner the 29-year-old gave a whole new meaning to the term injury time when he bulleted home a header and in the process smashed his face into the back of an opponent’s head.
Despite initially refusing to be consoled by his team-mates he eventually allowed former Le Mans team-mate and current LOSC striker Tulio de Melo to take a look at the injury, which required surgery the next morning.
Despite what looks like it will be a disfigured facial joint the brave centre half may have become something of a cult hero in Northern France for his heroic point-saver.
