Olympique de Marseille are well known in this country for various differing and bizarre reasons. Tony Cascarino’s stint at the club, the year they won the European Cup in 1993 amid a furore over a bribery scandal and probably most famously for their vociferous and passionate fans, some of the best in Europe.
This summer the club again came to British public scrutiny when Elie Baup decided to bring in one of the UK’s most popularly divisive footballers in the form of Twitter regular and Big Issue columnist Joseph Barton. The former Newcastle and Manchester City player joined the club on-loan for the upcoming season despite his hefty ban following on from his indiscretions at the end of last season.
Now Marseille may contribute even more to the Premier League as the Southern France side reportedly need to balance the books with a couple of big player sales in January, according to President Vincent Labrune anyway.

The Ghanaian international is the son of the legendary Ghanaian Abedi Pele and at just 22 is a five-year-veteran of the Marseille first team. Firstly Arsenal have a long standing interest in the winger which stems all the way back to 2008. The Gunners have raided Marseilles in the past for Samir Nasri and Robert Pires and chief scout Gilles Grimandi will undoubtedly be keeping an eye on progressions.

A regular in the transfer columns the pacy forward is a much coveted soul in the Premier League. His signing can be fraught with trepidation due to a pre-existing heart defect but that has not put off suitors such as West Ham, Tottenham Hotspur, Chelsea and Arsenal all previously being linked with the 25-year-old.
Stoke City also once showed interest and Liverpool need a dynamic central-forward; with Marseille’s star striker Andre-Pierre Gignac now out injured for six weeks it gives the 17-cap man a chance to impress for L’OM and potentially put himself in the shop window.
