Back in September we brought you a feature on the potential for Domenico Berardi’s move to Manchester United. The man dubbed the ‘next Totti’ had just scored his first goal for Serie B side Sassuolo and at 18-years-old had obviously caught the attention of Sir Alex Ferguson’s scouts in Italy.
'The interest from Manchester United? The player is followed with great attention by many clubs, including the Red Devils and also Juventus. But there are other Italian and foreign sides who have observed him in recent games. For the moment there has been no concrete contact, so we’re thinking about the present and how to develop Berardi in the best way. We are open to all options. We’ll see how things are going and how the situation develops. Domenico deserves attention; he has great qualities and he’s showing it. He has a contract with us until 2015 and if some big club should come forward we will see what is best for everyone.'
It was a revelation that appeared to come from nowhere but now it seems the secret is out in terms of this precocious talent.
Now United are from alone when it comes to English clubs chasing the 18-year-old, who has scored on three occasions this season.
His agent Guiseppe Galli admitted there was serious interest in his client earlier in the week:
'Juventus, Roma and Manchester City seeking Berardi? These are not rumours - this is real interest.’
While the Manchester clubs might be relishing a straight out dogfight they are not the only English clubs interested in his services:
'We have received accreditation requests to view our games in recent times from English clubs such as Liverpool and Southampton. But it is too early to talk about the market so there has been no contact with any club.'
Those were the words of general director at the Modena-based club Nereo Bonato who insisted that no deal would be conducted until June at the earliest.
Here is his goal and assist from the game with Crotone at the beginning of the season.
