Which is the best... you tell us...
Marco van Basten v the USSR, 1988
Van Basten’s volley against the USR in the European Championship final was one of the finest pieces of technique that you are ever likely to see from any European player. Arnold Muhren played a cross into the box which it seemed he had over hit. The ball floated to van Basten at the far post who could easily have knocked the ball back across the goal but he went for the volley and fired the ball in from a very tight angle.
Zlatan Ibrahimovic v England, 2012
Ibrahimovic’s goal against England will be talked about and played on TV screens for decades. Sweden were 3-2 up, England goalkeeper Joe Hart rushed out of his penalty area to clear the ball away from danger with a looping header. Ibrahimovic turned quickly and produced a superb overhead kick from over 30 yards out which looped over Hart’s head and bounced into the goal. There may never be a better overhead kick.
Paul Gascoigne v Scotland, 1996
Gazza had his critics because of his antics off the field but on it he was one of the best when it came to skill and finishing. England were leading 1-0 in the first group stage of Euro 96 against England, Gascoigne scrambled his way into the box before lifting the ball up and over Scottish defender Colin Hendry before rifling the ball in at the near post. Gazza will forever be remembered for this goal and who it came against.
Davor Suker v Denmark, 1996
Some in the game have said that the hardest thing to do in football is perfectly judge a lob from distance and especially when you’re some distance away from the goal. Davor Suker tried two lobs in the Euro 96 match against Denmark with the second coming off. Danish goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel was racing back to his goal following a corner, Suker retained his composure and chipped the ‘keeper just as he got back to his goal, arguably the greatest piece of calm and skill on a European stage.
Tomas Brolin v England, 1992
Brolin scored one of the most under rated European international goals ever in the Euro 92 group game against England. Sweden were trailing against England and Brolin played a star role in the equaliser. Sweden worked their way close to the England go via pass after pass after pass after pass, Brolin found himself at the edge of the box before dinking the ball over David Seaman to equalise. Superb.
