Italy: All of the top three drew this weekend, with Fiorentina the big winners as they reduced the gap to Napoli in third to just goal difference. Juventus and fifth placed Lazio played out a 0-0 draw in Turin, whilst Inter only managed a 2-2 draw with Cagliari courtesy of a 82nd minute own goal. Napoli let a 2-0 slip at home to AC Milan, with El Shaarawy scoring a brace to snatch a point for Milan. The talented player is reportedly a target for the Manchester clubs, and also scored his first goal for Italy mid-week.
Spain: Barcelona’s fantastic start the season continued with a Messi brace leading them to a 3-1 win at home to Real Zaragoza. Real Madrid went two better, beating Athletic Bilbao 5-1 at the Bernabeu. Valencia recent improvement was maintained as they won 2-1 at home to Espanyol. In contrast Malaga’s poor league form continued as they drew 0-0 at second from bottom Osasuna. Levante climbed above Malaga into fourth as a result, after winning 2-0 at Deportivo. Athletico Madrid secured a 1-0 win at Granada to stay five points clear of Real Madrid in second, and a Jose Antonio Reyes inspired Seville smashed Real Betis 5-1 on Sunday night.
Germany: Bayern Munich dropped points for only the second time in the league as they drew 1-1 away at Nurnberg. Second placed Schalke had an even worse weekend, losing 2-0 at Leverkusen who are now only two points behind them in fifth. The two clubs between them both won, with Eintracht Frankfurt winning 4-2 at home to Augsburg, and a Lewandowski brace firing Dortmund to a 3-1 win at Greuther Furth. Overall Bayern have an eight point lead over the chasing pack, having won ten of their first twelve games.
France: Zlatan-less PSG continue to underachieve, losing 2-1 at home to Rennes. The Swede has now served his two match ban, but it has cost his team dearly, as they dropped four points without him. Lyon and Bordeaux have overtaken PSG at the top of the table as a result, with Lyon beating Reims 3-0 at home, and Bordeaux defeating Marseille 1-0. Marseille are fourth as a result, but have a game in hand on second and third. The top of Ligue 1 is now incredibly congested, as only three points seperate Lyon in 1st from Rennes in 7th.
