Chelsea are one of the most ruthless clubs around. Have a bad spell and you will quickly find yourself out of a job. Carlo Ancelotti won the double but was sacked, Roberto Di Matteo won the Champions League and FA Cup in May but has been sacked already. This is intimidating for even the most experienced managers in the game.
There is no doubt that Pep Guardiola would be a fantastic coach to have at Chelsea. If they can get him in quickly then Chelsea will still have a chance of winning the Premier League title and he is the sort of boss who would demand the club signing someone like Falcao from Atletico Madrid.
However, he will be wary and rightly so. This is the manager that created the current Barcelona side, a team that many are calling the best football team to have ever played the game. He is not going to want to walk into a situation where the owner demands a trophy or he is out, he will want a situation where he can do something similar and that doesn’t happen in one season.
It’s due to his Barcelona ties that Guardiola is the hottest available coach around at the moment. He can effectively ask for whatever he likes and he needs to be very careful that there isn’t a dagger above his head from the moment he walks in through the door at Chelsea.
The club need to realise that they are not going to get anywhere while they keep changing managers so frequently. If Guardiola comes in, doesn’t win a trophy, and then gets sacked, he’ll gladly take the compensation and then move to another club that will give him the space and freedom to create another Barcelona.
If Chelsea wants to return to the days when they were dominating English football, turning Stamford Bridge into a fortress and genuinely becoming one of the most feared sides in Europe then they need to deal with any issues that Guardiola has with the club and his role at the club.
Guardiola is not the sort of manager who is going to walk straight into a ticking time bomb, but Chelsea have now called his bluff by making the position available.
Chelsea need to get onto his representatives, sort out a deal, get him in through the door now Di Matteo has been sacked - and then give him the years to get more silverware in through the door than ever before.
