Five ways Rafa Benitez will help Chelsea

posted: 6 months ago

Rafa Benitez Tour

Like it or loathe it Chelsea fans, Rafa Benitez is the man handed the task of pushing the club towards Premier League glory and ensuring Champions League qualification for next season.

How will the side benefit from his appointment?

Fernando Torres

The relationship between Benitez and Torres when the pair were at Liverpool was fantastic. Torres has looked like a completely different player since he joined Chelsea and the arrival of Benitez as temporary boss could get the most out of the striker. Torres could feel inspired, determined or happier with Benitez in charge and it has the potential to completely transform the way Torres plays.

Defence

Expect to see Chelsea turn into a much more defensive side when they don’t have possession of the ball. Benitez will get the key Chelsea attacking players back behind the ball helping out the defence which should make the club much more difficult to break down over the course of 90 minutes. He will also drill the back four into remaining disciplined, staying in shape, not leaving any space and covering for each other.

Tactics

Benitez is a brilliant tactician and he can read the game extremely well. The perfect example of this is when Liverpool went into the Champions League final against AC Milan and were 3-0 down at half-time. Benitez changed the system and tactics which allowed Liverpool to force the game into extra time and penalties before winning. Chelsea will benefit from this massively as they haven’t had an immensely talented tactical coach since the days of Jose Mourinho.

Character

Benitez is a big character which means he will be able to keep the dressing room unified. He understands the individual role of each player and understands their feelings in relation to the team. This character and man management will stop any revolution from happening similar to the one which ousted Andre Villas-Boas from his position during his time at the club.

Hunger

Benitez has been out of the game since December 2010 when he left Inter Milan. He’s been out of management for nearly two years so his hunger and his passion will be sky high. He has the ability to get that to rub off on the Chelsea squad which means the side stands a great chance of maintain a push for the Premier League title right up to the very last weekend of the season.
