1.1499 - Pretender to the throne Perkin Warbeck is hanged for attempting to escape from the Tower of London. He had invaded England in 1497, claiming to be the lost son of King Edward IV of England

2. 1890 - Princess Wilhelmina becomes Queen of the Netherlands at the age of 10, when her father, William III, dies

3. 1889 - The first jukebox is installed at the Palais Royal Saloon in San Francisco

4. 1963 - Lyndon B Johnson is becomes President of the USA

5. 1963 - Doctor Who is shown on TV for the first time.

6. 1971 - People's Republic of China is seated at the UN Security Council

7. 1984 - Almost 1,000 passengers are trapped in smoke-filled tunnels for three hours after a fire at Oxford Circus underground station, London

8. 1984 - According to a survey by Lyons, Tetley tea still remains Britain's favourite hot drink

9. 1990 - Roald Dahl dies

10. 1993 - Rachel Whiteread wins the £20,000 Turner Prize award for best British modern artist

11. 1998 - Donald Bohana, 61, is sentenced to 15 years to life in prison for the drowning death of Delores 'DeeDee' Jackson, the ex-wife of Tito Jackson
