Fans react on Twitter to Stewart Downing Arsenal transfer rumour

Arsenal fans have been disgruntled enough recently with chants of ‘we want our Arsenal back’ becoming bizarrely prevalent in recent weeks. This weekend fans were left frustrated by Arsene Wenger’s decision to leave Jack Wilshere on the bench during the bore draw with Aston Villa (it has since transpired he was struggling with swelling on his ankle) and the move that saw Francis Coquelin replace Olivier Giroud with just minutes left on the clock.

Now it seems the rumour mill is even starting to kick Arsenal fans while they are down by insisting that the North London club is looking to bring in Stewart Downing for £10million in January. First of all, £10 million! Who on earth came up with that estimate? Derek ‘Del Boy’ Trotter? Secondly will Wenger really want to sign a player who seems to be a universally unpopular choice among the Arsenal faithful?

Continuing on the rant while you can see the tentative reasoning’s for this link it surely has little basis?

Arsenal reportedly lost out (irony-in-hindsight) on Downing when he moved to Liverpool from Aston Villa and after his recent positional re-jig to left back Wenger may see him as good cover for a position where they seem short of options. However that is based mainly on the fact that current second-choice Andre Santos simply cannot defend. Now the charm of the chubby smiley Brazilian has worn off it seems a left-back is a necessity for Wenger in January. Bringing in Downing would do nothing to help that issue.

Then there is the fact he has not had a direct hand in a Premier League goal in almost 18 months; an issue that cannot be overlooked.

So while some fans have laughed the rumour off as highly implausible others have been very clear that they want Downing nowhere near their club; here are some Tweets…
