As most of you will know Andrew ‘Freddie’ Flintoff is stepping back into professional sport as a boxer later this week. His Sky One TV show ‘From Lords to the Ring’ has been engaging viewing as he battles his weight, fitness and learns how to box from the great Barry McGuigan and all the help at McGuigan’s Gym.
As he cuts back on his food intake, including no fish fingers, adopting the caveman diet it has seen him bring up many old demons about his weight and the amount he has lost is quite incredible; especially as he still retains much of the muscle definition that obviously gives such power to his punches. He has even done everything in his power to go without booze during the build-up for the fight which, if we all recall a certain incident involving a pedalo in the Caribbean, must be hard graft from a man who admits he likes to sneak a beer whilst walking the dog.
There has been plenty of support from the celebrity and sporting community. While some admit they worry about Freddie such as A League of their Own co-workers James Corden, Jamie Redknapp and Jack Whitehall others think he might have gone a bit mad; Michael Vaughan. Despite those feelings most people seem to be behind him 100% of the way and are very much impressed by what they see.
Except for Micah Richards that is. Indirectly Richards has claimed he could take Flintoff in the ring in four two minute rounds. Joleon Lescott has been the whistle-blower on Twitter and while obviously not a serious statement it’s always good to get a bit of schoolyard ‘my guy could beat your guy’ patter going on.
Manchester City have adopted boxing and wrestling as part of their training regime in recent times and while you have to admire the gusto of Richards somehow I think Freddie would have the reach on him. Anyway here are the Tweets from Lescott himself…
Been speaking with Micah Richards and he has quoted he could take Flintoff in 4 two minute rounds. #NoJoke
