Sir Alex Ferguson confirmed that club captain Nemanja Vidic could return for Manchester United in the Champions League tie with CFR Cluj next Wednesday. The Serbian centre-back has been out since September after surgery on a long standing knee injury; which it is hoped is now fully healed.
Since then United have welcomed back Chris Smalling and, tentatively at least, Phil Jones so the burden on the skipper may be less than previous as Rio Ferdinand and Jonny Evans are also in good form.
So while it hopefully means a final end to Michael Carrick playing at centre-back, well at least for the foreseeable future, United fans will obviously be pleased to have their combative defender back to full fitness once again.
While some could not contain the excitement others tempered the news by reminding people of the form of Evans and Ferdinand. Here is a collection of reactions on Twitter…
Brilliant news for #mufc re Vidic. Other defenders have been doing well, but you can't beat having your skipper on the road to recovery.

If Vidic does come back to fitness he shouldn't just jump back into the first tea. Evans&Ferdinand have been immense. #MUFC
