Fernando Llorente’s announcement that he will not be signing a new contract with Athletic Bilbao would have cause massive excitement from various teams all over European divisions.
Arsenal could be looking to add to their attacking fire power and Llorente would fit in well with the Arsenal philosophy. He is a much more subtle player than his size would suggest and if he played alongside Olivier Giroud in the Arsenal attack then any opposition side could be extremely intimidated.
He is more suitable to Arsenal because of the creative midfield players they have. Llorente has been brought up in the game in a country where the main idea is to pass the ball and move so he would be more likely to have an immediate effect if he joined Arsenal.
However, Liverpool will also throw their hat into the ring because they could have much more money to spend in the summer, providing Llorente doesn’t leave this January. He would be a completely different player to Luis Suarez and the combination of the pair could work well.
“It isn't about money because the offer the club made was irresistible. The media have not helped with the negotiations and it is one of the things that has generated the bad atmosphere around me out on the pitch. This has encouraged me not to renew my contract; this and many other things,” he said.
If he joined Liverpool then the emphasis would be much more on Llorente to do the creative work as opposed to relying on the ball to come into him in good positions from the midfield. Liverpool have played some of the best football in England at times this season and he would certainly enjoy a higher profile and a higher valued role at Anfield.
Llorente claims he made the decision that he was going to leave the club back in August after a Europa League game. He has blamed the press for creating a negative image of him which has led to verbal abuse in the matches he has played for his club this season.
Arsenal and Liverpool would love to have this player at their club. However, there are going to be a lot of other sides including some Spanish giants involved who will be on the hunt for his services which could spark a bidding war this January which could effectively price Liverpool out of the situation.
Which club would better suit Llorente? Arsenal or Liverpool?
