The words goal-machine are combined a little too often in football but the tag is rather apt for a certain player making a name for himself in the Austrian Bundesliga. Austria Vienna striker Philipp Hosiner is banging in the goals at the moment left-right and centre.
He has been doing the feat for a while now; after a tumultuous youth career that saw him playing for seven clubs before his 20th birthday including German side 1860 Munich and SV Mattersburg he went on to play for First Vienna and Admira Wacker where he was a regular goalscorer. Now with Austria Wien he has accumulated an impressive tally of 15 goals in 13 appearances; including three hat-tricks. The last of his 90 minute triple salvo’s came this weekend gone in a 6-3 away win at Wolfsberger.
He has been compared to Austrian goalscoring royalty Hans Krankl and he himself admitted he could see the 23-year-old moving abroad at the end of the season. The former Barcelona marksman believes he would suit both the German and English games as he is fast and technically gifted.
Ajax, Borussia Monchengladbach and other German teams have been linked with a winter move but considering FIFA regulations would prevent him playing for either club due to featuring for both Austria Wien and Wacker this season not to mention the fact he only signed for his current club in September on a contract till 2015.
At the moment he sits above Cristiano Ronaldo and Zlatan Ibrahimovic in the Golden Shoe charts but insists that he is not letting such high acclaim get to his head:
"This is just a snapshot. Messi and Ronaldo will still score many goals. I do not measure myself against such players. I'm in the Austrian league and I know that too"
However should we be keeping an eye on his progress in hope of him moving to the Premier League; If he continues his goalscoring form then certainly but he would also not be an expensive purchase. Austria Vienna sold their previous talisman Nacer Barazite for just €3 million in January so he could be a genuine target for some of the cash-strapped bargain hunters in the Premier League.
Either way he is certainly a top talent to keep an eye on over the next six months.
Here he is in action…
