Through the opening few games Manchester United played this season, Patrice Evra looked like a real weak link in the back four. However, he has come back, rectified the problems he was having and has been a solid rock in the United defence over the last few matches.
Reports have been all over the place since the summer and it’s obvious that PSG are in for a left back but it doesn’t look like it will be Evra which shifts the attention back to Ashley Cole at Chelsea. The United captain has even suggested the French club would need to kill sir Alex Ferguson before he is allowed to leave Old Trafford.
“You are not serious to ask me such a question? I have one year remaining on my contract, I am playing at Manchester United and I am captain. You would need to kill [Sir Alex] Ferguson before anyone made me go to Paris! There is nothing in it and I am happy at Manchester,” Evra told CanalPlus.
Evra was extremely poor in terms of his position during the opening few games and he seems to have worked out a method in his play which now allows him to be more effective. He doesn’t push too high up the pitch when he’s not involved in attacks which gives him a greater chance of coping with the superior pace of many wingers.
He is tucking in extremely well against sides that like to play the ball very narrow. This means there are no gaps between him and the first central defender on his side. It gives the United defence a better shape which allows them to absorb pressure much more easily against teams that like to retain possession and pass their way through a side.
He has also done a remarkable job as captain of the team in the continued absence of Nemanja Vidic. The cauldron of Manchester City last weekend was the perfect example of his leadership values. When things looked like they were about to boil over at the end of the match, he stuck up for his team and protected certain players.
Evra has also been keeping things simple with his defensive and attacking play. He doesn’t try anything too ambitious when playing the ball out from defence and he picks simple passes and crosses in attacks. There doesn’t seem to be any hint of hit and hope.
These are all qualities which he wasn’t showing consistently at the start of the season and qualities that he will need to maintain if United are going to wrestle the Premier League title back from Manchester City.
Should Evra stay at United?
