In the wake of Manchester United’s away victory over Manchester City in the 164th derby on Sunday, Patrice Evra has served a warning to his teammates that they could face the chop if they let their 6-point lead slip this term.
The Frenchman, who captained his team in the weekend’s win said,
“I think Ferguson is going to sack everyone if we [let this lead slip]. No, I'm serious. It would not be funny, for the fans, for the players, for everyone. A six-point lead – the league is not finished yet, there is a long way to go, but I really mean now we have to make sure we are ready."
With reference to the incidents in and around the Etihad Stadium last weekend, police have arrested nine people and, today, a further arrest was made of a 15-year-old boy for alleged racial abuse targeting United defender Rio Ferdinand via Twitter, during the game.
The suspect has been bailed pending further inquiries, as the FA continue their investigation into a number of crowd incidents, two of which involved Ferdinand. The FA have also charged City and England midfielder Gareth Barry with misconduct after he used abusive language towards the referee.
Meanwhile, Wayne Rooney expressed his pride to have overtaken former United and England legend Sir Bobby Charlton’s record of goals scored in a Manchester derby fixtures.
"I didn't know I was the top United derby scorer but I am proud of that," said the Englishman who has now scored 10 goals in fixtures between the two Manchester sides.
Whilst, Charlton discussed the possibility of Jose Mourinho succeeding Sir Alex Fergsuon as the manager of his former club.
Charlton claimed he has been unimpressed by the Real Madrid managers ‘antics’ and was unsure that he would be the appropriate successor to Ferguson’s legacy.
“He pontificates too much for my liking. He's a good manager, though,” he explained.
Manchester City boss Roberto Mancini has insisted, despite his side’s 3-2 home defeat, that City are a ‘better team’ than United.
"United have more experience but we have a much better team and play much better football," Mancini is reported to have told the Daily Mail.
In transfer news, the Independent claims that Arsenal are interested in signing out-of-favour winger Nani from United in January, the inference being that he could replace Gunners contract rebel Theo Walcott. In a further twist the Mail have published a photo of Nani, which it is claimed was taken outside Arsenal's London Colney training ground on Sunday, day of the Manchester Derby.
United have also been linked with signing Benfica winger Ola John, but we have taken a look at why the deal may not be ideally suited for player and club.
Former Arsenal striker Robin van Persie has told United’s official website that he hopes to learn from his teammates, notably Chicharito, who has become something of a ‘super-sub’ for United this term.
The Dutchman said of Hernandez,
"I love Chicharito’s enthusiasm. I love how he plays and trains and does his work off the pitch after training."
Finally, United’s U21 side travelled to face Aston Villa’s U21’s last night where they won 2-0. Both Bebe and Federico Macheda scored in the game as both players continue to perform on the periphery of the first and reserve teams.
