Twitter is often awash with sporting trends and Friday was no different; with England cricketer Joe Root sharing the bill with Australia vs. Sri Lanka in suitable Twitter short-form and perhaps unsurprisingly The Hobbit. Another hashtag that seemed to be doing the rounds was #UnderRatedFootballers.
There has always been a case made for perhaps the lesser regarded players in world football. Before leaving Real Madrid for Chelsea Claude Makelele was an infamously underappreciated footballing talent. As Madrid toiled in his absence Chelsea prospered.
Over the years there has of course been many. Personally I like to back up the maligned or forgotten football talent. I was a long term advocate of Owen Hargreaves along with a select group of loyal fans when he was consistently slated in the press and turnstiles. A few years later he was named England Fans Player of the Year and was the talk of Europe after a brilliant Euro 2008 performance.
Right now on a a personal opinion note for me the award has to go to West Brom midfielder Yousouff Mulumbu. Dynamic, destructive and fit as a fiddle his industrious box-to-box displays have been making me purr for the last 18 months in particular and Baggies fans were singing his praises way before I cam along clammering.
But in the world of Twitter who have the people decided to shout from the social networking rooftops as the football players who do not get the credit they deserve?
#UnderRatedFootballers - Torres. Gets so much abuse but he's really not as bad as people make him out to be, still not the player he was.
