Arsenal have been dealt a very tough draw in the Champions League last 16 as they will take on Bayern Munich. The Bundesliga leaders will travel to Arsenal for the first leg on February 19th with the return leg at the Allianz Arena on the 13th March. The two teams last met at the same stage in the competition in 2005 with the German outfit coming out on top as 3-2 winners.
We collated a best of reaction piece from Arsenal fans on Twitter with mixed reactions to the news.
The draw also gives Arsenal forward Lukas Podolski a chance to face his old team. The German international had a mixed time at Bayern during a three-year stint and will hope to get one over on his former employers.
Arsene Wenger has insisted that he remains very confident that Theo Walcott will stay at the club. Wenger maintains that Walcott belongs to the club and despite so far not being able to come to an arrangement with the club over his current deal - which expires at the end of the season.
Arsenal have handed England under-16 international Brandon Ormonde-Ottewill his first professional contract at the club. The attacking minded left-back is described as having blistering pace and signed the contract the same day as a more cemented quintet of Arsenal young talents such as Jack Wilshere and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain.
Arsene Wenger has defended the clubs board. In recent months the board has come in for some criticism over the way they distribute funds into potential transfer funds for the club. Alisher Usmanov, the clubs second-largest shareholder believes that Wenger does not have enough backing from the board and also criticised the sale of Robin Van Persie in the summer. Wenger however believes that he has always had the complete backing of the clubs board and would not be drawn on criticism.
Johan Djourou’s agent has reignited the flames of a potential deal that would see the Swiss international join Napoli in August. The club need defensive reinforcement after current duo Paolo Cannavaro and Gianluca Grava were handed six-month suspensions for failing to report match fixing. The Serie A side currently have fellow Swiss internationals Gokhan Inler, Valon Behrami and Blerim Dzemaili which Djourou’s agent Flavio Ferrara would help settle him in easily.
Wenger has also stated his claim that he is willing to spend in January. While insisting that he would not be panic buying he knows that he is under increasing pressure from the likes of Tottenham Hotspur and Everton for the fourth Champions League spot this season and will use some of the club funds in order to ensure his side qualify for Europe’s elite competition once again.
