When Arsenal offered Johan Djourou a new contract last Spring there was a lot of outcry among fans - His 2011/12 season had been awful and many viewed him as simply 'deadwood' who needed to be sold on.
While that was considered harsh by others at the time on a player who was one of Arsenal's best defenders a year earlier, almost a year on, the central defender is not one who looks to have a future at the Emirates.
With Per Mertesacker, Laurent Koscielny, and Thomas Vermaelen in front of him, Djourou has not played a single minute of Premier League football this season.
For a player at 25-years-old who still has international ambitions for Switzerland - it is essential he moves on. And now it looks like that could just happen.
German newspaper Bild has reported that Hannover 96 are ready to make a move for the player, to shore up their defence.
The club have around £20 million to spend this January, and Djourou could be the second defensive signing Hannover make this January - with Serbian international Gojko Kacar brought in from Hamburg.
Hannover can offer Djourou Europa League football, and regular opportunities - The defender would be well advised to go for it. The club signed Mame Biram Diouf from Manchester United last January and he was an immediate success, finding his way into the first team and has nine goals this season.
For Arsenal it would be an excellent move, shifting a defender they don't need off their wage bill and freeing up space for new acquisitions. It could be just the start of the clearout Arsenal need of their squad.
