Rafa Benitez has said that John Terry will not be fit to start tomorrow’s Premier League match with Southampton. Terry made his return as a substitute against Stoke at the weekend, but is still not fully match fit.
Gary Cahill is available to play after missing the weekend’s match to be at the birth of his son, whilst Demba Ba and Fernando Torres are both fit for selection. Southampton will be without Adam Lallana and Jose Fonte once again.
Speaking about the match Rafa Benitez has challenged his side to find a way to break down sides who come to Chelsea and set up defensively. Chelsea have lost their last two home games without scoring, and Benitez wants them to take heart from their impressive away form:
“We are doing well away but at home other teams play deep and wait and there's less space,"
"If we take our chances it will be totally different because the teams we play will be more open and we will have the space we're looking for.”
One factor that might be hindering their home form is Benitez’ penchant for rotating his best players, and on HITC today we look at why the Spanish manager cannot afford to rest key men so against Southampton tomorrow.
Benitez also indicated that the club’s stance that Frank Lampard will be let go at the end of the season has not changed despite the midfielder’s recent fine form. Petr Cech had indicated Lampard’s form could perhaps change this, but Benitez is only focused on getting the best out of Lampard until the summer.
Chelsea have let youngster Lucas Piazon go on loan to Malaga for the rest of the season. The youngster made his Premier League debut earlier this season in the 8-0 hammering of Aston Villa at Stamford Bridge. Piazon was unlikely to get many chances at Stamford Bridge after the arrival of Demba Ba, though HITC’s Mathew Nash asks if some fans would have preferred Piazon to be given a chance ahead of Fernando Torres.
There has been speculation that Shakhtar Donetsk would now be willing to sell Willian this January if their asking price of £20 million is met. The player is keen to leave the Ukraine, and Chelsea are expected to battle it out with Tottenham Hotspur for his signature.
Under fire Real Madrid coach Jose Mourinho has said he would like to return to management in England at some stage. The Portuguese manager is likely to leave Real Madrid this summer, with Chelsea perhaps interested in bringing back to Stamford Bridge.
