Given that both Arsenal and Liverpool have been linked with a loan for David Villa at times this window, they might be a little disappointed if they end with Isaac Cuenca instead. The 21 year old has showed plenty of potential at Barcelona, but clearly cannot be put in the same bracket as Villa.
Last year saw Cuenca break into Pep Guardiola's side at the Camp Nou, and he was impressive playing as part of a front three. Having impressed in the Barcelona B side, Cuenca was promoted to the first team and made 30 appearances in all competitions last season, contributing four goals and seven assists.
However Cuenca has been injured for the whole of this season so far, and has now returned to fitness to find Pedro, David Villa, Tello and Alexis Sanchez all ahead of him in the pecking order for a first team place. With that in mind, Barcelona are reportedly happy to loan Cuenca out to gain first experience in the second half of the season.
Looking at the names ahead of him, it's fair to say that the fact that Cuenca cannot get in the Barcelona side is not a reflection on his own lack of talent, and he could be a real asset to plenty of sides around Europe. Liverpool in particular could benefit from having Cuenca to bolster their squad, especially if Brendan Rodgers continues to play a front three with two wide forwards.
It would be a shame for Cuenca to return from injury only to play no part in first action in the second half of the season, and if a Premier League club does bring him in on loan, it would be exciting to see him showcase his skills in this country.
