Arsenal have been linked with a lot of players so far in this January window and if they pull off the arrival of Mats Hummels from Borussia Dortmund for £18 million, it can be considered one of Arsene Wenger’s greatest transfers.
It will be one of his greatest because of the current context surrounding Hummels. His place is undoubted at Borussia Dortmund; he’s well liked and respected, so the club have no reason to force him out.
He’s also playing regularly for the German national side and a move away from the Bundesliga could risk that because the Germans aren’t short of quality players at the moment.
Then we have the question of the fee which, like it or not, will be a lot higher than £18 million for any side trying to sign him.
This is because of the current contract he’s on at Borussia Dortmund, which is not ending any time soon, and the fact he’s one of their most important players who would be hard to replace.
Bear in mind rumours surrounding a move to Manchester United have already come and gone because of the very reasons mentioned above. You’ve also got to consider the fact that not once has Hummels said he wants to move away from Germany.
There’s also no reason for him to go anywhere in terms of silverware because Dortmund are regularly competing for the Bundesliga title and are regularly qualifying for the Champions League.
They have even been tipped as a solid outsider to win the European Cup and have been frequently named as the side to avoid based on their performances throughout the group stage.
A move to United, Manchester City or Chelsea would be much more realistic because Hummels will consider Dortmund as a superior side to Arsenal in many ways, so where is the sense in leaving one of Germany’s biggest clubs for a lower quality team?
