Tottenham have sealed the early transfer of Lewis Holtby from Schalke, who had been scheduled to join them in the summer. The move was completed this afternoon, meeting Schalke halfway at £1.25 million. Spurs had previously seen a £800,000 bid rejected while Schalke wanted £1.7 million. Holtby is the second leading assist provider in the Bundesliga and will give Tottenham greater options going forward.
Brazilian attacker Willian has been discussing the possibility of a last minute switch from Shakhtar, keen on a move to London, but insists he would be content to stay in Donetsk for now.. Both Chelsea and Spurs are said to be monitoring him, but no progress has been made in terms of a transfer to either club.
The Mail claim Jermain Defoe is nursing a pelvic injury which could require an operation. They discuss the fact the striker could return for the midweek fixture with Norwich but would require an injection to play, and the concern is that the problem will worsen. Defoe missed the FA Cup defeat to Leeds at the weekend.
As far as alternatives go, the paper mention that Sevilla's Alvaro Negredo remains a possibility, and Aston Villa's Christian Benteke is a long-term target but cannot be bought this January due to the fact he has already played for two clubs this season.
Emmanuel Adebayor may not make an early return either. If Togo beat Tunisia this week his country will qualify for the knockout stages of the African Nations Cup, delaying his potential comeback.
Moussa Dembele has said the Spurs side were 'not motivated enough' in their defeat to Leeds, but says the side will go all out to win the Europa League. He said:"You have to give extra energy to motivate yourself and maybe that was a bit of a problem for us but we still feel we can win a trophy this season, because there is a lot of quality in our group."
So today Willian re-iterated his current stance: "I don't feel any pressure as I have met with the Shakhtar board and they are aware of my desire to move to a big club in Italy, Spain or England. I have two more years to go on my contract here and will continue to give my best.
"Chelsea are a great club and won the Champions League. Tottenham are a big club as well, and have a good coach in Andre Villas-Boas.
"They are two clubs with tradition. I'm still with Shakhtar for now, though. The transfer window is open for a few more days, but there are no offers it seems."
