You don’t get too many names that are more Arsenal than Dennis Bergkamp, a Dutch legend still talked about as one of the club’s best ever players.
Bergkamp is currently assistant manager at Ajax but Arsenal are planning to appoint him head of their youth team academy after they revealed Liam Brady will step down before his current contract expires in May 2014.
Here are five positives Bergkamp will bring to the role.
Bergkamp amassed a great deal of experience during his time as a player with just under 100 appearances for Ajax, over 50 for Inter Milan, over 300 for Arsenal and 79 caps for the Netherlands. Therefore, it’s undoubted that he has a solid general knowledge of football and the industry as a whole.
The fact Bergkamp has been involved as a coach with Ajax, and is now assistant manager, means he is perfectly geared up for the man management side of an academy based role. It means he can nurture and take care of Arsenal’s younger players who will be at their most fragile in terms of mental ability and confidence.
Knows the Club
Bergkamp knows the club, he knows what it means to play for Arsenal and he knows how important it is for the fans to see young players progressing into the first team. This knowledge will ensure that he helps to bring through young players at Arsenal with the right basic values of honesty and respect.
Bergkamp has played under Arsene Wenger. Therefore, he knows the style of play and philosophy which Wenger is constantly trying to stress at the club. This guarantees that Bergkamp won’t push through or recommend any player for the Arsenal senior side who is ultimately going to damage the basic way the team plays football.
Bergkamp’s reputation as a top class professional, during his playing career and as a coach, means he still has a valued reputation in the game. This only aids Arsenal’s chances of signing the best youth players around England, Europe and the world which in turn will enhance the reputation of the club and improve Arsenal’s transfer pulling power.
Arsenal fans, do you want to see Bergkamp back at the club?
