Afcon: Ghana beat Cape Verde to reach semi-final

The Espanyol midfielder hammered home a 54th minute penalty and then scored in injury time to put his side through to the next stage of the 2013 edition of the African Cup of Nations.

The game started in a rather subdued fashion with Cape Verde looking the more threatening of the two but as the half-time break approached, neither side looked capable of breaking the deadlock.

The opening goal sparked some life in to the tie but Wakaso's penalty seemed to inspire Cape Verde and not Ghana who seemed comfortable to play on the back foot.

Ghana keeper Fatawu Dauda was forced in to making a string of superb saves which earned him the man of the match award.

However with the game entering its final stages and Cape Verde throwing everyone, including the keeper up field for a corner, Ghana would capitalize when Wakaso broke and stroked the ball in to the empty net.

Ghana head for a semi-final against the winner of the Togo-Burkina Faso quarter-final and will continue their search for a first title since 1982.
