Well, he seems to have got his wish with the Sunday papers suggesting that Chelsea have agreed to extend his current loan deal another season, which means he’ll be a West Brom player until at least the summer of 2014.
Granted, the Belgian forward is still a very young man at only 19-years-old but Chelsea are now just making it even more difficult for themselves when they eventually do call him back from this loan deal.
They’re making it more difficult for themselves because by allowing Lukaku more time at West Brom, they are increasing the chance that his feelings about the two clubs are only going to get stronger.
What this will result in is even more resentment towards Chelsea when they call him back. They’ll have an unhappy player on their books who wants to be somewhere else.
It may transpire that Lukaku makes a permanent move because he does not figure in Rafa Benitez’s plans at Chelsea. This could happen in the summer if both clubs see sense and realise that an effectively permanent loan deal is maybe not the best option.
You’ve also got to consider the fact that Chelsea may have a new manager this summer as it’s been well documented Benitez is only in charge on a temporary basis.
This new manager may want to recall Lukaku, who will currently be expecting another season at West Brom. It all creates extra friction which is not the best way for a club and a player to move forward.
Then there are the fans. The Chelsea fans who pay their hard earned money to watch their side and they only want to see players fully committed to the club.
Will they feel a little resentful when Lukaku moves back to Chelsea? Maybe, a small section definitely will. This will result in hostility towards the player, which is something else which will just push him further away from the heart of the club.
At the moment, all parties seem happy with what they have got. The player gets to stay somewhere and improve on his ratio from the 26 games he’s already played for West Brom and Chelsea don’t have to worry about an unhappy player in their squad.
However, it does just seem like the problem is being pushed back. Most worryingly is a fit and motivated Lukaku is an asset to Chelsea, one they don't appear to be taking advantage of.
What do you think?
