Everton were extremely close to receiving a serious upset as Aston Villa at one point lead 3-1 during their tie at Goodison Park this Saturday. Aided and abetted by one of the worst performances of the season by the lacklustre Jonny Heitinga they raced into the lead before Maraoune Fellaini once again dragged The Toffees kicking and screaming toward a 3-3 draw.
It was a result that again highlighted the clubs frailties when injuries strike. With Jagielka being asked to do a job at right-back in the absence of Seamus Coleman and Tony Hibbert the Dutchman looked dangerously out of nick throughout his 65 minutes on the field of play when he was hauled off for Bryan Oviedo.
Fer had surgery on his knee earlier in the season and Everton medical staff was believed to be unhappy at the way in which his meniscus injury was repaired; with an apparently high chance of recurrence. Everton pulled the plug on the deal and despite efforts to bring in Alvaro Negredo from Sevilla the club in the end made just the sole acquisition of Barnsley youngster John Stones.
Considering the lack of depth in the squad that was highlighted against Villa this weekend should Everton have done a ‘Demba Ba’ with the transfer of Fer?
As many remember Ba was all set to join Stoke City before a similar knee issue was brought up in his medical that gave The Potters the jitters. The plug was pulled on the deal.
Ba joined West Ham and has since gone on to score goals for Newcastle United and now Chelsea; with little evidence of any knee trouble.
While on one hand it is easy to say that Everton should have gambled on the player considering the attributes he would be bringing to Goodison there is hardly any money available for gambling with on the Blue half of Merseyside. Many other clubs may have fancied taking their chances on Fer regardless of potential risk factor but the pursestrings at Everton are extremely tight so risking that type of fee on a player, no matter how talented, was simply not a viable option for Kenwright, Moyes and co.
Do you think Everton should have taken a chance on Fer?
