Swansea City have announced that they have secured the future of key midfielder Leon Britton on a deal until the summer of 2016. We’ve taken a look at five of the main positives of this news for the club.
Britton has been a Swansea player since 2002 and has experienced various promotions and struggles as the club has got into the Premier League. He knows the identity of the club which is very important going forward as Swansea attract new and exciting players.
Britton is a very versatile midfielder in the Swansea team which means he gives Michael Laudrup options. He’s at his best when he’s almost given a free role and allowed to spray passes to more creative players but his versatility makes it easier for the manager to change his tactics in the middle of a game.
Britton’s passing is superb and a measure of his quality is a player. This may sound like a really cliché positive to put on the list but he is accurate, never gives the ball away and enables Swansea to turn defence into attack in next to no time. He does things simply and will always play a simple bass before a complicated one.
Britton has made over 400 appearances for the club which means he has been consistent over a long period of time and he’s stayed fit over a long period of time. This consistency makes him reliable, which in turn makes him indispensible to the team, which could be about to embark on a journey into European football.
His new contract shows that there is tremendous belief around the club at the moment and that has the ability to rub off on the fans in a positive way. Mr Swansea is committed to the club and he would not have signed a new deal if he didn’t believe the club were heading in the right direction. It also shows the belief that Swansea have in their core players, eradicating the chance of sales to key players.
Swansea fans, we’d love to hear from you in relation to this news.
