Mario Balotelli is in the news for all of the wrong reasons this time after AC Milan’s vice-president Paolo Berlusconi using a prominent racial slur to describe Balotelli in an incident which was caught on tape by TV reporters.
Balotelli signed for AC Milan from Manchester City in a deal worth just under £20 million and he may already be regretting his decision.
He may regret it because there would never be an incident in English football where an official connected to Manchester City casually racially abuses Balotelli for no apparent reason.
Milan’s president Silvio Berlusconi has also described Balotelli as a ‘rotten apple’ in the recent past which suggests he may not be held in the highest regard by the people who actually run the club.
The news is extremely negative especially considering the recent example of Kevin-Prince Boateng who walked off the field during a friendly after he was racially abused by supporters.
What this tells is that the people who control AC Milan are greatly out of sync with common modern football and don’t see the problem in using outdated beliefs regardless of who it offends.
It also adds ammunition to the suggestion that the Berlusconi brothers only brought Balotelli to the giant Italian club as a publicity stunt to enhance their own popularity in political polls.
Balotelli is yet to speak out on the comments made by Paolo but it’s highly unlikely he will enjoy being described in such a way and undermined by the people who are meant to represent him at the very highest level.
Also bear in mind, this is a player who has been made to endure racism in the past so it hits at a sore point, which he may have thought was long over.
There is no justification for what Paolo Berlusconi said even though he was at a rally for the right-wing People of Freedom Party which Silvio represents.
Granted that particular party more than like his ideologies and prejudices which it has always held and values that it tries to push forward but you don’t say something so stupid about one of Milan’s highest profile players, when cameras are in your face.
What an idiot. It’s just unfortunate that nothing serious will be done about this as the person who ultimately controls Milan is his brother.
