Jurgen Klopp is a name which has been associated with Chelsea before and a name you’ll hear a lot more of over the coming months.
They could do a lot worse because Klopp has helped Dortmund into the last 16 of the Champions League and he has developed one of the best young squads of German players that the club has ever seen.
The problem is his own personality because he is quite a character and leads a much more public life away from match days than Chelsea may want.
How that interacts with Roman Abramovich remains to be seen but Chelsea won’t want him doing a million and one adverts or product endorsements as well as looking after the current European champions.
However, that side of his personality does work well in relation to his man management because it shows he has a fun or softer side and it makes him approachable.
This is important for the younger players at Chelsea who want loan moves to get first team football, want some help to improve their game or players who are having a problem with some aspect of the club.
He’s also consistent with back-to-back league titles to his name and although Dortmund are struggling at present, this is the sort of high level of consistency that Chelsea will be looking for.
Abramovich could be tempted into going after Klopp because he may be reluctant to bring up old memories that were created the first time he worked with Jose Mourinho.
He may also have great difficulty in trying to get other established Premier League managers to take over at Chelsea e.g. David Moyes has been heavily linked with the job but it’s just difficult to see that happening.
Klopp does have the advantage of being popular with the current Dortmund side which means if he joins Chelsea this summer, the Blues could have first choice on any of the young Germans at the club who become available.
Chelsea fans, do you think Klopp would be a good fit for your club?
