With the most recent transfer window only just closing there has already been some bad news ahead of the re-opening of the window in the summer if you are a Liverpool fan. After missing out on Tom Ince in January the club were also reportedly in talks with German international Kevin Grosskreutz of Borussia Dortmund.
The 24-year-old winger has been one of the key members in the Westphalia sides’ recent dominance of German football and has been linked with several top clubs; in particular throughout January.
One such club was Liverpool; who saw him fitting in perfectly with their new expansive passing style but considering BVB are most peoples dark horses to win the Champions League you could understand why the German winger was not particulary keen on a move away from the Bundesliga just yet; as he hopes to embark on a great season with Die Schwarzgelben.
Yet now it has become clear that his apparent reluctance to talk to teams in January, including Liverpool, extended beyond six months of ambition.
Yesterday he signed a new two-year extension to his contract which will now keep him at the Signal Iduna until 2016 speaking of the deal in glowing and personal terms:
"I'm happy playing for the Yellow-Blacks, Borussia Dortmund have always come first for me and I'll give everything I've got to be successful with this club. I was, am and remain a Borusse."
It may seem bizarre to even be talking of the summer window in such an advanced situation but in here lies the positives of this new deal for any potential suitors of the talented Die Mannschaft player.
Less than a week after the close of the January window and teams such as Liverpool can pretty much cross the name ‘Grosskreutz’ from their summer wish-list already and start to plan for more likely and similarly talented individuals.
After his brace against Sweden for England under-21’s Tuesday night you have to feel that Tom Ince will be that man in the summer and now any Germanic competition for that signature appears to have gone through the window.
Who would you have rather seen at Anfield? Grosskreutz or Ince?
