Jamie Carragher has announced his decision to retire at the end of the season. With Sebastian Coates struggling to fulfil his potential and Martin Skrtel also going through a rough patch Liverpool are going to need to bring in centre-back reinforcements this summer.
But who could it be?
Alvaro Dominguez - Borussia Monchengladbach
The Spanish international only signed for the Bundesliga outfit in the summer after four successful seasons in the first team at Atletico Madrid. Just 23-years-old and capable of playing at both left-back and centre back he certainly fits into the Rodgers philosophy of play and could be a perfect purchase. He also speaks fluid English from his time at the Madrid arm of Kings College.
Ashley Williams - Swansea City
Rodgers would certainly like to reunite himself with another one of his former Swans at Anfield. The centre-back has earned major plaudits for his performances this season as Swansea have made it to their first ever major cup final.
Fernando Amorebieta - Athletic Bilbao
Liverpool are already being linked with the Basque Venezuelan international and considering his style of play you can understand why. Imagine Chico Flores but left footed and better. As wonderful a passer of the ball as he is a tackler this would be a superb addition to the Liverpool first team.
Javier Mascherano - Barcelona
OK, so you are probably thinking there is no way this one can come to fruition but hear me out. Since leaving Liverpool for Barcelona in 2010 he has been converted into a magnificent central defender. He only left Anfield in 2010 due to the ownership of Tom Hicks and George Gillett and has a clear admiration for the Liverpool fans:
“The Liverpool people and fans treated me very well. I cannot say anything against them and they will always be in my heart.’’
First team football is not ensured at Barca with Carles Puyol signing a new contract and Gerard Pique an essential member of the team. With youngsters Marc Bartra and Marc Muniesa just itching to make the step up Barca could consider selling the Argentine captain in the summer.
Mamadou Sakho - Paris Saint-Germain
The French international recently made his intention to leave PSG very clear as he struggles to hold down a regular first team slot in the French capital. Fearing for his international career he is ready to depart but an apparent asking price of £20 million may make someone spit out their coffee.
Would you like to see any of these players at Anfield as a replacement for the retiring Jamie Carragher?
