Jose Mourinho's side had started 2013 well and were gaining on cross city neighbours Atletico Madrid but a defeat to lowly Granada last week has now seen them drop further behind second spot and ultimately 16 points behind league leaders Barcelona.
With a successful title defence now out of the question, Madrid are still in the Champions League and in the Copa del Rey semi-final, however they face Manchester United and Barcelona respectively, so form is important going in to those games.
Crunched in between those big ties, Madrid also face Rayo Vallecano and a visit to Deportivo La Coruna, a team they have not beaten in the Riazor for over 20 years which make February an extremely crucial and high pressured month for Jose Mourinho and his side.
Cristiano Ronaldo has not given up hope though and has called on his team-mates to fight.
"We are still competing in the Champions League and in the Spanish Cup," he told UEFA's official magazine.
"We are a bit far behind the top teams in the league, but we still have a chance, maybe a bit less in the league, but in the two other competitions, and we'll keep on fighting to win."
This weekend Madrid host a Sevilla side who have lost just once in six matches under new coach Unai Emery and winger Jesus Navas is determined to prove his worth against Madrid after almost a year without scoring.
"I'm just waiting to get the first, when I do then more goals will come." he said in AS.
"I'm having a lot of chances and the ball just doesn't want to go in. It would be very nice to get my first goal of the season at the Bernabeu, which is a special ground."
"I've done well against Madrid and scored against them several times. Sevilla, in general, usually show up well against Madrid, both at the Pizjuan and the Bernabeu. Normally they are very attractive matches with a lot of goals," said Navas, who is not bothered by suggestions his performances this season have not matched up to previous campaigns.
"I feel very good, as always, apart from the goal aspect, but I've already said that I'm not worried about that, we're going (to Madrid) with a lot of confidence after recent results."
Real Madrid face Sevilla on Saturday night at 21.00 GMT.
