Christian Eriksen has set the alarm bells off at many clubs following the news that he is not going to sign the current new contract offer placed before him by Ajax.
The rejection of the new terms means the club may be forced to move him on in the summer of a new deal can’t be sorted out. Liverpool have an advantage if any bidding war develops.
Eriksen has been linked with Liverpool, Manchester United, Manchester City and several other European clubs but Liverpool have a player who can slip a word or two into his ear; Ryan Babel.
Babel is currently one of Ajax’s most important and most consistent players and the fact he didn’t leave Anfield on bad terms means he can stick up for the club and put in a good word for the area and the team.
Liverpool would not be blamed for approaching Babel and asking that he do just that which would not be completely outside the normal rules and regulations when it comes to going after players.
They may not even need to because even though Babel didn’t set the world on fire at Liverpool, he was involved in some big wins and he experienced the club, what it means to the area and those special European nights at Anfield.
He spent four years at Liverpool making just under 100 appearances for the club so he has solid experience of the way Liverpool are run and the Premier League in general.
Bear in mind Eriksen is a very young man so if Liverpool show interest, he may not be sure whether to choose Liverpool over Manchester or even the more appealing lifestyle of a chance to play for a London based club.
He’s not a naïve 20-year-old and is bound to ask someone like Babel about the club and whether it would be a good move. Liverpool can only pray that he says nice things which help them get closer to a deal.
He’s indicated that he would like to stay at Ajax to develop his career but Liverpool need to use their external advantage if he officially becomes available because the club can’t compete financially against other sides.
Therefore, they have to look for any advantage when trying to sign Eriksen that others sides don’t have and Babel undoubtedly gives them that. Whether it turns out to be enough is a different question entirely.
Do Liverpool have any chance of landing Eriksen?
