Several Gunners fans rejoiced when they heard the news that the left back was being sent out on loan to Gremio for the rest of the season and they may well have thought that was that.
Santos has not been at all consistent during his Arsenal career. He is prone to making basic errors on the pitch and he’s also been known to get himself into trouble away from the pitch.
However, he insists he will be a fitter, better and more consistent player when he returns and has revealed that Arsene Wenger only pushed through the deal to re-harden his confidence.
“Do I have a future at the club? For sure. This is a loan deal and after this season we will see where everything stands. I always wanted to stay here until the end of my contract. This is a club where I feel comfortable and honoured to play,” Santos told Standard Sport.
If he does return to Arsenal then it could create more problems than answers for Wenger, who may reluctantly be forced to sell him to preserve the balance and immediate future of the side.
Arsenal now have two high quality left backs in Kieran Gibbs and Nacho Monreal, who both seem to be fitter and playing at a higher quality than Santos ever did during his limited performances for the club.
These two players prove that Santos is the third choice left back and if he goes back to Arsenal and effectively demands to play, then he could find himself outside in the cold again very quickly.
It’s a sensible move from Wenger to get him out on loan but if he’s thinking Santos doesn’t fit into his plans, especially now, then it’s not looking good for the left back who could be tempted into staying at a side where he is first choice.
He’s had a chance in an Arsenal shirt and he’s blown it. If he was that good, he wouldn’t be going out on loan in the first place.
Key question Gunners fans, do you want him back?
