West Ham have not been the same since they slid off the pace following their early season form and they’re jetting off to Dubai for some r and r while the FA Cup games take place this weekend.
It’s news that has not sat well with many West Ham fans who would prefer to see the side working hard at home to eradicate many of the current problems the team has but there’s a very good reason Allardyce is thinking outside the box.
West Ham did exactly this at a similar time last year which the manager says is one of the main reasons his side only lost one of their last 14 Championship matches.
“I still think the trip that we had at this time last year was a big benefit in the end for getting us promoted into the Premier League. I have talked to a lot of managers and they have already taken the opportunity to get away,” Allardyce told West Ham TV.
So what are the benefits of literally getting up and leaving in the middle of a season?
Well to begin with, Premier League sides don’t get a winter break which means there is no opportunity for the players to sit back, relax and recharge their batteries in a different environment.
West Ham players won’t literally be sat on their backsides throughout the trip and the training sessions in different conditions could help in several ways.
These sessions will be more physically demanding because of heat and humidity which will play a large part in the fitness of Hammers’ players during their last few matches.
It also helps in terms of bonding and allows the team to have a laugh and forget about their bad run of form.
This is very important because West Ham looked like a side that needed a big boost against Aston Villa in terms of morale and this is the sort of trip which can achieve that.
It becomes an easier environment for the manager and the players to work in as opposed to a freezing cold winter day in the UK, where several players are probably thinking about being somewhere different, like Dubai.
Whether it works for a second season running remains to be seen.
Holidays in mid-season, good or bad idea?
