Liverpool played superbly during the group stage to win a group which included Russian giants Anzhi and experienced Serie A side Udinese. They finished with a record of three wins, one draw and two defeats. Brendan Rodgers has claimed this is now Liverpool’s main priority for the season.
This is the first time Zenit have played in the Europa League this season, as they enter this point after dropping out of the Champions League. They finished third in their group behind AC Milan and Malaga. They won two games and took a point from another but lost all of their other fixtures.
It will be interesting to see if Liverpool’s players can ignore the inevitable verbal and racial abuse they are likely to receive.
