1. 1564 - Astronomer Galileo Galilei is born

2. 1933 - The Chicago Mayor Anton Cermak is shot by Giuseppe Zangara, who was attempting to assassin President-elect Franklin D. Roosevelt

4. 1942 - Singapore surrenders to the Japanese during World War Two

5. 1952 - King George is buried at St George's Chapel at Windsor Castle, after a solemn procession through London

6. 1961 - At least 73 people are killed when a Boeing 707 jet airliner crashes at Berg, near Brussels airport

7. 1965 - Nat King Cole dies

8. 1971 - The UK banks reopen as the British Government launches the changeover to the new decimal currency system across the country.

9. 1996 - The long-awaited report into the sale of arms-to-Iraq in the 1980s is published and contains strong criticisms of the ministers involved

10. 2003 - Millions of protesters around the world demonstrate against the threat of a U.S. war on Iraq

11. 2005 - YouTube is launched in the United States
