Here is a note of 11 things that happened on this day in history

1. 1674 - The Netherlands and England signed the Peace of Westminster, by which New Amsterdam passes to the English (and was renamed New York)

2. 1807 - Aaron Burr, Vice President under Thomas Jefferson, is arrested for treason. He was later acquitted

3. 1878 - Thomas Alva Edison patents a music player (the phonograph)

4. 1942 - U.S. President Roosevelt signs an executive order giving the military the authority to relocate and intern Japanese-Americans

5. 1942 - The New York Yankees announce they will admit 5,000 uniformed servicemen free to each of their home ball games during the coming season

6. 1959 - Britain, Turkey, and Greece sign an agreement granting Cyprus independence

7. 1960 - Prince Andrew, The Duke of York, is born

8. 1995 - Tommy Lee (Motley Crue) and Pamela Anderson marry 

9. 2001 - A Suspected case of foot and mouth disease is detected at an Essex abbatoir, the first case in the UK for 20 years

10. 2008 - Fidel Castro resigns as President of Cuba after 49 years in power. Raúl Castro, Fidel's brother, succeeds him as President

11. 2010 - Tiger Woods makes a public apology for the scandal he had casued: 'I was unfaithful, I had affairs and I cheated. What I did was unacceptable'.
