Liverpool may be spending well over the odds if they decide to buy Arda Turan for a fee in the region of £19 million.
He’s a player Liverpool have been consistently linked with over the last few months and fresh reports are surfacing suggesting the parties involved are working on a fee.
Atletico Madrid are having their best season in living memory as they chase Barcelona for the La Liga title and currently hold a four point advantage over city rivals and current champions Real Madrid.
Turan has been a large part of the team this season making 19 starts and three appearances from the bench. You’d expect decent figures for this number of appearances but he’s scored just four goals and has provided only three assists.
Last season he played even more games with 24 starts in La Liga and nine sub appearances but his figures were marginally better, if not arguably worse; three goals and six assists.
His best spell in recent memory seems to be the 2009/2010 season when he was still a Galatasaray player. He made 29 appearances in the Turkish league that season bagging seven goals along the way.
Liverpool, or Brendan Rodgers, will really need to desire Turan as a player if they go after him because his stats suggest that he’s not a player worth the reported money they are willing to pay.
It’s a lot of cash, especially for a club that has changed its transfer policy and there are several other targets Liverpool could go after where the money may be better used.
Liverpool seem to have left the days of paying £20 million plus for a player behind, which means £19 million on nothing more than an average winger wouldn’t make a lot of sense in the grander scheme of things.
He is of the age that would appeal to Brendan Rodgers, 26, in terms of being able to bring in a wide man who could do a job and understand the way he is trying to develop Liverpool as a football club.
However, his stats have stayed roughly the same for the last seven seasons so is this a massive giveaway that he’s not got much left in him, in terms of development? Rodgers could find it very difficult to squeeze any more out of him.
