Anyone who follows Serie A will know that Cagliari are battling away to try and get further clear from the bottom of the table to ensure their safety.
They are being forced to play behind closed doors this weekend against Torino because their new Is Arenas stadium is in short, not safe.
The stadium requires a safety certificate before every game and the local council have deemed it unsafe which means Cagliari will miss out on the gate receipts that would have been generated by over 16,000 fans.
It’s since emerged that the club’s president Massimo Cellino along with the Mayor and a public works commissioner, have all been arrested, suspected of fraud during the period the stadium was ‘brought up to scratch’.
It’s a massive blow to fans of the club because the stadium is currently certified as an illegal structure and it could be destroyed, leaving Cagliari with no ground for their fans to watch games in.
Cagliari moved to the stadium for the start of the season after the local council refused to make guarantees over their previous ground, the Stadio Sant'Elia which has since been closed.
Ground sharing is now an option or the club can fight to try and get games hosted at the Is Arenas stadium by addressing safety concerns.
Either way Cagliari could slide down the table for a variety of reasons, with the most prominent being a lack of support and a loss of cash through gate receipts and various sponsorship and broadcasting deals.
