1. When did you start your LinkedIn group and what made you want to create one ?
I started the group in late 2007 to find a job!
I was seeking a change and I decided to create the group to help me network with the hiring managers from top organizations across the globe.
LinkedIn was emerging as one of the top professional networking sites at that time, and creating the group helped me demonstrate my social media expertise.
2. How did you market it to people initially and when did it start to grow ?
Few things that I feel helped me grow the group initially were:
a) Approving every registration request manually with a welcome email telling them how they can use the group, interact with the group members and how to get in touch with me in case of any queries.
b) Scanning LinkedIn for potential members and inviting them through InMail or requesting introductions from other members
c) Engaging the group members in frequent discussions to check if users are looking for any added features in the Group Discussion section or regular newsletters
d) Promoting the group by posting the group URL on related social media sites to encourage growth and requesting other members for the same.
3. Are you by nature an optimist or a pessimist ?
I’m generally a realist, someone who is easy-going to work with and good at finding solutions to problems. Above all, I would say I’m a positive and enthusiastic person – and I relish a challenge.
4. Which business leader do you most admire and why ?
Though there are a lot of Business Leaders that I admire, when asked to name one I would choose Ratan Tata, the former Tata Group chairman.
He has been a leader for over two decades growing the group legally and ethically. For a man of his reputation, he demonstrated the highest level of integrity with grace and humility. These are lessons enough for business people all over the world.
5. What's the biggest lesson you have learned in your career to date ?
Collaboration is the key to success. Relationships are EVERYTHING. Nothing matters without them… With them anything is possible!
6. What's your favorite business quotation or life motto ?
'Courage is the first of human qualities because it is the quality which guarantees all others' – Winston Churchill
7. What's the best business book you've ever read ?
The Tipping Point: How Little Things Can Make a Big Difference by Malcolm Gladwell
