Liverpool don’t have big money to spend this summer so they need to think about spending as little as possible and as wisely as possible.
One of their top priorities should be Hatem Ben Arfa from Newcastle United, someone they will have to fight hard to get signed on a good deal but someone who could help Liverpool develop tremendously next season.
In Ben Arfa Liverpool would be getting a player who can play down either wing, which is very significant in terms of helping the way Raheem Sterling plays.
It would give them a different option in wide areas and would enable them to rotate the squad well because Rodgers has often lamented the size of Liverpool’s squad this season.
They would also be getting a player who recently said he thought he could reach the same level as Lionel Messi of Barcelona. As tremendously unlikely as that sounds, what harm can having a player with that ambition do to a club?
Ben Arfa is also the sort of player who fits into Liverpool’s current ideology perfectly because he’s almost made for the way Rodgers is trying to play football at the club.
He is used by Newcastle as an attacking weapon, someone who can run at the opposition, pierce the defence and bring others into the game when he’s under more pressure.
The stumbling block in all of this is going to be the price because Newcastle are not going to let him leave, unless they get a very good deal.
This is where Liverpool and Rodgers need to negotiate hard because they can’t afford to pay well over £20 million for players any more.
Liverpool is very much a club set up and aimed at hitting that break even point each season and they are also changing player’s contracts with more bonuses and incentives above a high salary.
If they want Ben Arfa then it could be one of the most difficult transfers Rodgers has had to arrange during his career but it’s one that has the potential to help Liverpool explode.
Do you see Ben Arfa in a Liverpool shirt any time soon?
