Manchester United came away from their under-21 fixture with Liverpool last night more than satisfied, winning 2-1 against a home side who fielded Jonjo Shelvey and Raheem Sterling.
United won 1-0 thanks to an injury-time goal from defender Michele Fornasier, in a fixture which is a must-win at any level for both teams.
Making his debut in a Red Devils shirt was Jeffrey Schlupp, a trialist on loan from Leicester City, who has been with United for over a month.
Schlupp is 20, already capped by Ghana, and can play a variety of positions, up front, on the left-wing, or even at left-back.
Last night he led the line for United's side up front, and completed all 90 minutes. How did he get on?
Well he didn't score, but he certainly had his moments. As United's official website reports: "Schlupp, who has won full international honours with Ghana, troubled Liverpool all night with his pace and could – perhaps should – have scored several times in either half.
"Inside two minutes, the 20-year-old slotted just wide after racing onto a through-ball, before seeing his shot blocked by Liverpool goalkeeper Daniel Ward after being played through by Tom Lawrence soon after, as United started brightly."
He was also involved in the goal, when he created a chance for a teammate which whose shot rebounded to Fornasier to force in, so he can certainly be satisfied he did his bit.
So while his finishing was a bit rusty, there were still plenty of positive signs. He'll be glad it ended with a win, and the good news from his poor chance conversion is his versatility, as it may be his future lies playing on the wing.
Here are how watching United fans reacted on Twitter to his display:
@andycave: Not a bad performance from triallist Jeffrey Schlupp. Worth another outing, I'd say
@matherto: Schlupp is the new Saha. Quick, powerful and ****ing crap at finishing
@munitedgirl: I'm really impressed with Schlupp's performance!
@andre_ds18: I like the look of Schlupp a lot
@mr_mitchb: Schlupp was impressive, great head downs and pace, I like him.
@hennomg: That Schlupp looks very promising. Should've scored 4-5 times tonight.
@doronsalomon: Schlupp reminded me a bit of Ebanks-Blake - quick, powerful, strong, good movement but link-up a bit poor. Had to be more clinical too.
@saf_salvi: This schlupp guy is good !
The player himself had this to say:
@jeffrey_schlupp: Thanks for all the nice messages everyone! much appreciated
What do you think of Schlupp's potential? Is he worth signing?
