Few Saints fans may be aware of Ben Reeves but if his form at Southend United is anything to go on, they could be hearing a lot more about him over the next couple of seasons.
Reeves is the current stand out performer at Southend and he bagged the goal which has sent the club to the final of the JPT Trophy. In short, he’s look far too good to maintain a spell in League Two.
In fact his performances in the Southend midfield have been so dominant that it really wouldn’t be any surprise if he gets a chance under Mauricio Pochettino next season unless he’s sent out on loan again but to a higher quality team.
He’s only played five league games for Southend but the striking aspect of Reeves’ play is the way he controls the ball and the tempo of passing and movement in the middle.
Whenever he’s in possession, he never really looks like giving it away and he doesn’t look as though he’s going to get bullied or forced off of the ball at any point.
He does all of the simple things well which is important if he’s going to get a chance in the Saints first team.
The one area that he could improve and work a bit harder on is his physique because at the moment, he has a very slender and fragile frame which is something that most Premier League teams would look to exploit.
It’s not like the Saints know nothing about this youngster because he has made first team appearances this season; a start and two sub appearances in the Carling Cup and three sub appearances in the Premier League.
However, all of those were under the guidance of Nigel Adkins and Pochettino has clearly looked at the situation and told him to go away and work on something.
All of the omens are good because Southampton have a brilliant little midfield man who can rival someone like Adam Lallana in terms of effectiveness when he’s at his very best.
It’s just a matter of time before he gets a decent run of games.
Saints fans, what do you think of him?
