You might have expected it would be the Barcelona v Real Madrid game in midweek which would be the bad-tempered Copa del Rey final, but instead it was Atletico Madrid v Sevilla which saw a red card brandished.
Now the Portuguese midfielder, now 31, has had to undergo an operation to repair the damage.
He has suffered a badly fractured arm and has had to have a plate screwed into it. He is expected to miss at least two months and could be out for the season.
He told AS from his hospital bed: "He was going to clear the ball and to protect my face I put my arm in up. I felt that something was wrong because I did a lot of damage. I tried to keep playing but I realized I could not continue. It hurt so much and (i) tried to hold it with the other arm so it does not move much. "
Atletico Madrid midfielder Tiago spent one season at Stamford Bridge in 2004/05 scoring four goals before leaving for Lyon.
