Liverpool’s 4-0 demolition of Wigan Athletic yesterday was another example of just what Brendan Rodgers’ side is capable of.
They have done their bit and if the North London derby goes the right way for Liverpool, their hope of finishing fourth will be substantially increased.
The worst case scenario for Liverpool is unfortunately a home win which will send Tottenham above Chelsea on 54 points, which will bring the Stamford Bridge side down to fourth on 52 points.
That means a ten point gap which Liverpool have to make up over the rest of the season meaning four matches they have to win and rely on other results going their way.
An Arsenal win would clearly be the better result for Liverpool because that decreases the points gap by a point as Spurs would remain on 51 points with Arsenal moving up to 50.
That decreases the number of matches that Liverpool need to capitalise on by one, which is arguably much more achievable than needing 40% of results over the rest of the season to go their way.
Liverpool have been very inconsistent at times this season but they showed a deep determination yesterday which means if they can get through March with a perfect record, who’s to say they can’t pull off a perfect record for the rest of the season.
The task is still a big one because they have to get past Everton as their first challenge, who currently have a three point advantage over Liverpool in sixth place.
Liverpool need Arsenal to them a favour because a win for Spurs or a draw creates a ten point gap up to fourth place.
It’s a very competitive mix of teams fighting for fourth place at the moment but Liverpool can take great confidence from the fact Manchester City overturned an eight point gap in six games last season to win the title.
The point for Liverpool is to win, to keep winning, to climb the table and wait for other sides to drop points. Run-ins almost become irrelevant as the calibre and profile of some sides can go out of the window when the pressure is really on.
If they do pull it off, is it one of the club’s best recent achievements?
